Day Trip Itinerary
Stop 1: A (large) slice of Africa
Embark on your journey at Monarto Safari Park, an open range zoo that is home to 50 of the world’s most exotic animals, including lions, cheetahs, rhinos, zebras and giraffes. This sanctuary promises an immersive experience for the whole family!
Stop 2: A long and lazy lunch
Drive 15 minutes southeast and you’ll find yourself in the heart of Murray Bridge, at stunning Long Island Reserve. Nestled along the banks of the Murray River, this reserve is a favourite for tourists and locals alike. Admire the views of Isle Charlotte, the long island that splits the river in two, or enjoy a refreshing dip and a play on the playground. Our suggestion? Grab some snags and heat up one of the provided BBQs for a delicious Aussie lunch!
Or
Situated in the picturesque Sturt Reserve, the 1924 Riverfront Steakhouse stands as a cherished gem for both locals and travelers, drawn to its inviting riverside charm and delicious menu. Whether you choose to enjoy the surrounding playgrounds and skate park, or simply observe the passage of houseboats along the waterway, this venue stands out as a great dining spot within the region.
Stop 3: Say hello to Bertha
Once your lunch has settled it’s time to get back into your adventure. Take a scenic stroll upstream and you’ll meet the famed Murray Bridge Bunyip, Bertha. We don’t want to say too much, lest we ruin the surprise, so we’ll just tell you that this very Australian attraction is more than worth a look.
Stop 4: Step back in time
Old Tailem Town Pioneer Village
Returning to your car, you’ll only need to drive 15 minutes to go 150+ years back in time. Old Tailem Town is the biggest Pioneer Village in the Southern Hemisphere, and captures South Australian history through the eyes of European settlers from 1860 to 1960. Each of the 115 buildings has been carefully restored to capture a specific moment in South Australian time, and the 15 streets allow you to quite literally walk through a century of progress.
Stop 5: One last dip!
At this point you may be getting tired after a long day of fun, in which case Adelaide is just an hour’s drive down the highway. But if the kids are still full of beans, there’s no better place to visit than the Murray Bridge Swimming Centre. Along with it’s olympic size swimming pool, the centre offers five kids’ waterslides, a huge water dumping bucket and plenty of water features for toddlers and babies.
After your big day of exploring, jump back on the highway and drive back to Adelaide, less than an hour via the South Eastern Freeway. While the kids doze off, you can begin to plan your next trip to the fun, exciting, thriving city that is Murray Bridge.
